FERTILITY

Preparing for a fertility consultation

Start with a clear account of your goals, history and questions.

Choose the right service

Fertility counseling is not the same as an IVF or egg-freezing program. Confirm exactly what the clinic can assess and whether it refers to a fertility center for additional care.

Prepare your records

Bring menstrual dates, prior test results, treatment records and a list of medicines. Ask which investigations are appropriate for both partners where relevant, rather than choosing a generic package.

Understand the next step

Request an explanation of the proposed tests, their limitations and how results affect your plan. Obtain a written quote and clarify where continued treatment will take place.

THE DECISION THAT MATTERS

Find out whether you need initial assessment, specialist fertility treatment or continuity with a team already caring for you.

Options to discuss with a clinician

Initial assessment

A history, relevant examination and targeted tests can help identify what to investigate next. Both partners may need assessment where applicable.

Investigations

Tests may address ovulation, the uterus and tubes, or sperm. Timing and suitability depend on the history; not everyone needs every test.

Specialist referral

A clinic offering fertility counselling may not provide IVF or egg freezing on site. Confirm the exact service and referral arrangements before travel.

Questions specific to this concern

  • Which question will each test answer, and how would the result change treatment?
  • Do tests need to occur on particular cycle days?
  • Can you coordinate with my existing fertility team?
  • Which parts of care happen here and which require another centre?

What to bring

Bring cycle dates, duration of trying to conceive, previous pregnancies and losses, surgery records, laboratory reports and treatment summaries. Include medicines, supplements and any partner results that you have permission to share.

Plan the care after your appointment

Plan enough time for results to be explained, and ask what can be completed remotely. Avoid booking a short visit around an assumed fixed treatment schedule before the clinic has reviewed your situation.
