SCREENING

Cervical screening & HPV

Understand what a test is for before choosing a screening package.

A conversation about prevention

Cervical screening is intended to help prevent cervical cancer. Your recommended tests and timing depend on your age, history and the guidance relevant to you.

Bring your history

Bring previous HPV or cervical-screening results and any treatment records. Ask which test is being offered, why it is appropriate and how results will be explained.

Plan for the result

Before testing abroad, agree how you will receive results, who will explain an abnormal finding and how further assessment can be arranged at home.

Comfort during the appointment

Ask about a chaperone, language support and how to pause an examination. You can raise concerns before giving consent.

THE DECISION THAT MATTERS

Know whether you are booking routine prevention, follow-up of an abnormal result or assessment of symptoms; these are different appointments.

Options to discuss with a clinician

Routine screening

Screening looks for HPV and, where indicated, cervical cell changes. The appropriate schedule depends on your history and the guidance applicable to you.

Follow-up testing

An HPV-positive result does not by itself mean cancer. Repeat testing or colposcopy may be recommended depending on the result.

Symptom assessment

Tell the clinic about unusual bleeding or other symptoms when booking. Do not assume a routine screening appointment answers every symptom question.

Questions specific to this concern

  • Which test is included: HPV testing, cytology or another test, and why?
  • Do my previous results change what I need now?
  • Who will explain my result, and when should I contact you if it has not arrived?
  • If colposcopy or a biopsy is recommended, can follow-up take place where I live?

What to bring

Bring the full laboratory report from previous screening, not just “normal” or “abnormal,” along with dates of any cervical procedures. Tell the clinician if examinations have been painful or difficult so comfort measures can be discussed.

Plan the care after your appointment

Agree on a confidential results channel, translation needs and responsibility for any next appointment. Keep the original report and an English explanation so a clinician at home can interpret the recommendation.
